Dunkeld offers a great selection of small local shops, art galleries, craft shops, pubs and restaurants. Alongside this are well stocked local food stores, a great butcher and the hugely popular Aran bakery. The surrounding area has many beautiful walks, great tracks for cyclists and plenty of fishing for anglers who can enjoy salmon fishing on the Tay or trout fishing in the surrounding lochs. Dunkeld Cathedral, with its stunning riverside setting, was founded in the 13th century on the site of a former monastery. It remains the parish church and hosts concerts throughout the year.
For mountain bike enthusiasts Dunkeld offers superb mtb trails, largely based in and on the nearby Craigvinean Forest, Newtyle Hill and Birnam Hill, the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors, whatever the weather. Loch of the Lowes just outside the town is a designated wildlife reserve where visitors can observe the visiting ospreys and enjoy live webcam footage of the resident red squirrels.
Birnam and Dunkeld are set on opposite banks of the river Tay and are surrounded by wooded hills and stunning countryside. The nearby Hermitage offers beautiful riverside walks, majestic woodlands and Victorian follies. Birnam Arts centre is a fantastic arts and entertainment venue offering a vibrant arts & events program and is also home to the popular Foyer Cafe, Potter's Junction Gift Shop and Beatrix Potter Exhibition. For golfers Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Club is one of the most picturesque in Perthshire.
